Fallout 4's Nextgen update "broke" in-game safeties and mods - and doesn't work properly with displays

Next-generation update for Fallout 4 has appeared after a two-year wait since its initial announcement and release of the franchise series, but it brought disappointment to players, especially on PC. Compatibility issues with mods were expected from Bethesda's release, but players did not benefit much from the patch, which weighs approximately 14.4 GB on PC.

  • Traditionally, game saves made with mods were broken. Problems also arose with using mods unrelated to Creation Club, including Fallout 4 Script Extender on which many other mods are based.
  • In fact, the "next-gen" update does not contain any graphical improvements.
  • Fallout 4 still does not support frame rates above 60 frames per second.
  • Configuring Weapon Debris graphics still crashes the game on NVIDIA RTX video cards, a problem existing since the RTX cards appeared.
  • Support for ultrawide monitors incorrectly stretches the user interface, requiring unofficial fixes - almost the same solution used by gamers before the update. Some common resolutions are missing.

Minor bug fixes and added content seem to be inadequate compensation for a broken game with mods. Modders also had to make an effort to adapt to the special edition of Skyrim and the next-generation update of The Witcher 3, but these patches offered much more. The next-generation update for Fallout 4 seems more console-oriented, providing better support and more options for PS5 and Xbox Series, but PC users are more likely to suffer than enjoy.

But they are not the only ones suffering. The Fallout 4 update removed the game settings menu on Steam Deck and worsened the game on the portable console. Players who downloaded the update on Steam Deck found that, while trying to make the game "Verified" on Valve, Bethesda removed the game launcher program. It was a somewhat unpleasant popup window on Steam Deck, but it was also the only way to change visual settings in the game. Now the default settings are applied upon launch. Also, the game still does not support the available OLED 90 Hz screen refresh rates on Steam Deck.

However, one important fix has appeared, which even modders did not fully address. The settlement defense system in the game was malfunctioning (hello, Preston Harvey) - incorrect value calculations led to their destruction.

The update also includes several new quests and equipment from a paid mod from Creation Club by Bethesda, with the biggest change being a quest about the Enclave theme and some related weapons and armor. This resembles the armor sets from "The Witcher" series added in the next-gen update for The Witcher 3.

It is likely that modders will fix everything that has broken in the game. But Bethesda will probably want to do it too, and the race between them will continue for some time.
