Atlus originally drew inspiration for the game Metaphor: ReFantazio from classic fantasy works, particularly "The Lord of the Rings," but later abandoned this approach in favor of creating an original world.
Katsura Hashino, the project's director, discussed in the Official Xbox Podcast the influence of traditional fantasy during the early development stages of the game. The team examined not only classic works but also the motivations behind their creation and the authors' sources of inspiration.
According to the director, this approach would not have allowed the team to showcase their originality and creativity. Therefore, the developers chose to move away from prior concepts and create something entirely new based on their own preferences.
Hashino also emphasized the importance of human stories in his projects.
“I aim for even an imperfect or incomplete element of the game to convey the humanity of its creators and the emotions that inspired them,” he shared.
Speaking about the Persona series, the director noted the intriguing contrast between character realism and anime aesthetics. This characteristic is also present in Metaphor: ReFantazio, where the heroes face very human challenges within a fantasy setting.
Metaphor: ReFantazio was released last week and already set a sales record for Atlus, achieving a million copies sold on its first day. Critics praised the game for its successful blend of nostalgia and modernity, as well as its optimistic perspective on overcoming societal prejudices.
