The previous rumors about the expansion of the Destiny franchise to mobile devices have been confirmed. The Chinese studio NetEase Games is developing a new free mobile fantasy RPG shooter titled Destiny: Rising. This game will feature several hero characters, a shared world, and both PvE and PvP modes set in the Destiny universe.

Destiny: Rising will take place in an alternate timeline of Destiny, exploring the era of the universe following the Dark Age — prior to the emergence of the Tower and the Guardians. NetEase has licensed the Bungie Destiny brand and has been granted creative freedom to develop its own storyline and vision for Destiny: Rising.

“We want to capture and depict a specific time where players are in control to experience, explore, and define,” said representatives from NetEase.

Unlike Destiny or Destiny 2, players will be able to choose from a variety of hero characters from Destiny instead of creating their own Guardian based on the Hunter, Warlock, or Titan classes. Available hero characters include Ikora Rey, who exists in both Destiny and Destiny 2, along with many new characters.

Each character will have unique abilities and backstories, as well as access to single-player, cooperative, and competitive multiplayer modes. There will also be familiar Ghosts, Lightbearers, Iron Lords, and Warlords known in the Destiny universe prior to the Last City. The game trailer showcases a diverse range of characters and their new abilities, including a new Void Scythe resembling what a Warlock would use in the main Destiny games. Familiar enemies are also present.

Destiny: Rising will allow players to switch between first- or third-person views using touch controls or controllers. There will be regular campaign missions, cooperative outings for six players, and recurring PvE and PvP modes. The mobile game will offer powerful exotic weapons, new mythical rare weapons, and new locations. Part of the new Destiny narrative involves searching for seeds of hope that will “shape the future of human civilization” following its downfall in the Dark Age of Destiny.

The alpha test for Destiny: Rising will begin next month. During the testing period, "a substantial portion of the main campaign" along with "at least one map for all game modes" will be available. NetEase has not yet disclosed the monetization system for this project.
