The arrest of Telegram's founder has increased the messenger's popularity — the app is currently ranked second in social media charts in the App Store, with global downloads on iOS rising by 4%.

Meanwhile, in France, where Pavel Durov was detained, Telegram topped the social media rankings in the App Store and became third overall, reports TechCrunch.

In the United States, Telegram jumped 10 positions in Apple’s chart of most popular apps, landing at number 8. According to Appfigures, this is the highest ranking for the messenger since at least January 1, 2023.

The App Store rankings typically reflect a combination of factors such as the number of app installations and download speed, among others.

As of Sunday, global downloads of Telegram on iOS increased by 4% in just one day, according to Sensor Tower.

Recall that Pavel Durov was detained late Saturday night at the Paris airport. According to a press release from the local prosecutor's office, investigators are examining the founder's involvement in 12 crimes, including facilitating illegal drug trafficking and possession of pornographic images of minors — particularly due to his refusal to cooperate with law enforcement and moderate the messenger. Durov will remain in custody at least until August 28.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, stated on Monday that Durov's arrest is not a political decision, and the arrest occurred as part of a judicial investigation, with all decisions to be made by judges.
