It was anticipated that Samsung would launch its flagship Galaxy S25 smartphone series in January 2025, utilizing Exynos chips for the standard and Plus models, while the Ultra variant was expected to be powered by Snapdragon processors. However, these plans have encountered setbacks.

Reports from South Korean media indicate that the company will have to rely on Snapdragon chips for the entire Galaxy S25 lineup. The reason behind this decision is that Samsung is facing a low yield rate of viable Exynos 2500 chips. Consequently, the company might not be able to produce a sufficient number of its own processors in time for the launch of the corresponding versions.

According to Business Korea, Samsung Foundry is experiencing a "low yield of viable chips" based on the 3-nanometer process standards, but the publication has not been able to provide specific figures. In chip manufacturing, the yield rate is never 100% since rectangular chips are cut from circular wafers, resulting in waste. Even more importantly, not all chips pass quality certification, leading to variations in yield rates from one production line to another.

If this information is confirmed and Samsung does indeed shift to Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processors, it will represent another blow to the company's semiconductor business. Samsung has already lost orders from Nvidia and Apple, as these companies have turned to TSMC for the production of AI-supported chips.
