The studio Riot Games, known for the popular game League of Legends, has announced another round of layoffs. Although this statement seems somewhat contradictory, it includes a promise that the League team will become "even larger than today" in the future. Yes, the layoffs will be beneficial.
Information about the layoffs came from a message posted on X by Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill. He stated that Riot "has reshaped our teams and how we work to ensure we can continue to enhance the League experience both now and in the long term."
“As part of these changes, we made the tough decision to eliminate certain roles,” Merrill wrote. “This isn't about downsizing for cost savings, but rather ensuring we have the right expertise to keep League great for another 15 years and beyond. While team effectiveness is more important than team size, the League team will ultimately be even larger than it is today as we develop the next phase of League.”
In a follow-up post, Merrill mentioned that “success isn't about throwing more people or money at a challenge,” but rather that the true goal is “the right team, the right priorities, and a sustainable approach to delivering what players need.”
While we're on the subject of team size, I want to talk a little about both size and budget, and why they aren't the right way to measure whether a team will be successful. We've definitely been memed in the past for talking about budgets, and rightly so. Success isn't about…

A representative from Riot Games reported that 27 League of Legends developers are being laid off along with five staff members from the studio's publishing sector. These layoffs come less than a year after Riot let go of 530 employees and closed its Riot Forge program, which was launched in 2019 for creating standalone League of Legends games with external studios.
At that time, CEO Dylan Jadeja stated that Riot Games had become "a company without sufficient focus" and had too many projects that were not paying off. He also added that “we are not doing this to appease shareholders or impress anyone with quarterly profits — we made this decision because it’s necessary to maintain a long-term focus on players.”
