Peter Molyneux has returned with a new game about gods, titled Masters of Albion, which he unveiled at Gamescom 2024. Yes, Albion is the world of Fable, for which Molyneux doesn’t hold the rights.
The Fable series was developed by the British studio Lionhead until Microsoft shut it down in 2016. Currently, Microsoft is working on an entirely new Fable game being developed by Playground, the studio behind Forza Horizon. So, is Masters of Albion a Fable game? Molyneux explains:
“Albion is an old English name for England, Wales, and Cornwall. I believe it’s a truly fascinating world. This is an interesting universe that Fable touched upon, and I genuinely think that Albion in Masters of Albion expands on this concept, but it's not actually Fable 5 or anything like that.”
When asked if Albion in Masters of Albion is the same Albion that players explored in the Fable games, Molyneux responded:
“Yes, yes. The events of Fable took place in Albion, and Masters of Albion is also set in Albion.”
But how? Perhaps Microsoft may object to Masters of Albion being set in the Albion of Fable? Molyneux states that the concept of Albion as a location is not owned by anyone.
“Albion is like saying that if you set a game in America, you cannot set any other game in America. So, Albion cannot be copyrighted. It’s a term for England and Wales, and that’s how we approach it,” he said.
So it appears that the Albion in the game is not quite the same Albion.
Masters of Albion is described as an open-world god game, which undoubtedly contains several nods to Molyneux’s past works — the enormous hand controlled by the player is a direct reminder of Black and White. Manage and build a city, create some unusual equipment like a bread sword, control any character, and fend off the “horrors of Albion.”
Peter Molyneux left Lionhead in 2012 after completing Fable: The Journey to work at his new studio, 22cans. There is a Masters of Albion page on Steam, but the list of platforms and release date remain unknown.
