Despite the fact that the data storage industry has widely adopted PCIe 5.0, video card manufacturers have not yet released video cards with the new interface. However, progress in developing its next generation has reached PCIe 7.0.
PCI-SIG, the organization responsible for developing PCI Express, announced that PCIe 7.0 specifications are now available in version 0.5. This happened after the release of version 0.3 in June 2023. The initiative for the new standard was launched back in June 2022.
PCIe 7.0 boasts a data transfer speed of 128 GB/s and a bandwidth of 512 GB/s for bidirectional interfaces through a x16 configuration. It uses PAM4 signaling and focuses on increasing energy efficiency. PCIe 7.0 is backward compatible with all previous generation PCIe specifications. This means that PCIe 7.0 video cards or storage devices are hardware compatible up to PCIe 1.0.
Features and Goals of PCIe 7.0
- Data flow speed of 128 GB/s and up to 512 GB/s in two directions through x16 configuration
- Use of PAM4 signaling (4-level pulse amplitude modulation)
- Focus on channel parameters and coverage
- Reduction of latency and increase in reliability and dependability
- Increased energy efficiency
- Support for backward compatibility
The consumer video card market is still waiting for the adoption of PCIe 5.0, however, data center accelerators already have this interface. Gaming reviews comparing different PCIe specifications show that while the bandwidth doubles with each generation, the benefits for video cards are insignificant. The launch of PCIe 7.0 is expected in 2025.
