Sony has officially unveiled an updated version of its flagship console — the PlayStation 5 Pro, which brings substantial enhancements in graphical performance and rendering technologies.

During a special technical presentation, Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5, outlined three key improvements of the new model: a more powerful graphics processor, enhanced ray tracing, and proprietary AI upscaling.

The PS5 Pro is set to launch on November 7 at a price of $699.99. The console's appearance is reminiscent of the slim version of the PS5, featuring three distinctive stripes on the side panel. Notably, the new model will not include a disc drive.

Internal upgrades in the PS5 Pro will enable rendering speeds that are 45% faster than the original model. This will enhance detail and frame rates in games. According to Cerny, one of the main objectives of creating the PS5 Pro is to allow gamers to not have to choose between performance and image quality modes.

Sony has equipped the PS5 Pro with a graphics processor containing 67% more computing units than the current PS5 version. Additionally, the new console boasts memory that is 28% faster.

The extra power of the PS5 Pro will significantly improve ray tracing capabilities. Developers will be able to run rays at speeds that are two to three times greater than what the current PS5 can achieve.

The PS5 Pro also features a new AI upscaling technology called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This function operates similarly to Nvidia's DLSS or AMD's FSR, enhancing frame rates and image quality in games for PlayStation. PSSR is designed to replace existing implementations of temporal anti-aliasing or scaling in games.
