Apple is not planning to update its Mac Studio and Mac Pro computers to M4 chips until at least the middle of next year. This was written by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg in his new Power On digest. So both computers this year will come with M2 processor generation, while most other systems will offer newer and more powerful components (except for MacBook Air).
It is expected that during 2024 all Apple laptops (except MacBook Air) will transition to the M4 chip, which the company recently introduced with the new iPad Pro tablet. Thus, due to the strange update cycle, the iPad Pro is currently leading in single-core performance among Apple devices. This situation is likely to persist for about a year if compared to Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
Moreover, the lag in this performance indicator for the productive systems of Mac Studio and Mac Pro will be quite significant. According to Geekbench results, the new iPad Pro with the M4 chip outperforms the M2 Ultra by about 25%. In fact, even the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro is approximately on the same level of single-core performance as the M2 Ultra. However, in multi-core performance, the M2 Ultra provides significantly better results thanks to a larger number of computational blocks. At the same time, this does not apply to the version of Mac Studio with M1 Max, which shows slightly lower multi-core performance than the new iPad Pro.
