The update for Google Pixel smartphones, which was released earlier this month, received a significant number of security fixes. Among them was the patch for the zero-day vulnerability CVE-2024-32896. Google labeled it as a "high severity" and warned users that malicious actors could exploit this vulnerability to launch attacks on the device.
The company urged users to install the update to protect themselves from the vulnerability, which involved a privilege escalation flaw that could be exploited for attacks. Now, the heavy artillery in the form of the U.S. government has joined Google's calls. In fact, the government has given Google Pixel users two options: either update their phones within 10 days or stop using the device.
According to Forbes, the government ordered federal employees to choose one of the two options: stop using their Pixel devices or update their phones by July 4. This means users have 10 days to comply with the requirement. Even though the warning pertains to governmental entities, companies may also follow this directive, and individuals connecting to corporate networks must also install the security update to protect themselves from any potential harm.
GrapheneOS noted that the issue was reported as early as April, and it is another part of another security problem - vulnerability CVE-2024-29748. Despite the patch being created, they have been actively exploited.
Furthermore, the company expressed concern that the issue is not limited to Pixel devices, stating that it will also affect other Android devices and will be addressed when they update to Android 15.
