Cybertruck owners say Tesla was surreptitiously swapping out faulty engines under the guise of research - before a massive failure

Last month, several Cybertruck owners reported that Tesla offered them a complimentary drive unit replacement during their next visit to the service center. The company attributed this offer to an investigation of the early models of the Cybertruck. However, some Cybertruck owners have recently experienced engine failures. Some believe that under the guise of research, Tesla was quietly conducting a voluntary recall of the engines.

There have been several issues with the Tesla Cybertruck lately — many of its advanced technologies are still in the early stages. Almost everything about this electric pickup differs from other vehicles, starting with the manufacturing process, body design, materials, and new technical solutions.

Early users reported numerous problems with the Cybertruck, although Tesla has resolved most of them. However, not all issues have been identified, and Cybertruck owners continue to report problems, including engine malfunctions.

In most cases, the issues began with unusual noises from the back or jolting sensations. Shortly thereafter, the pickup displayed several error codes related to the rear drive and entered "turtle mode." So far, issues have only been observed in the all-wheel-drive versions.

One owner received assistance from Tesla service center staff, despite it being a day off. Based on the logs, they suggested that either the rear inverter or the rear drive was malfunctioning. They explained that the rear inverter has a pyrofuse designed to protect the drive and that it had been triggered, which resulted in the rear motor shutting down. However, it was unclear if the motor itself was damaged.

Car owners experiencing similar issues reported waiting more than two weeks before Tesla found a replacement for the rear inverter. Others had better luck — they received help within just two days. Some arrived directly at the service center when the issue occurred, and they were immediately offered a loaner vehicle while their inverter was replaced within a few days. This indicates that Tesla is aware of the problem and has already prepared materially for it.

It was at this point that everyone recalled the offer of a free engine replacement. It seems that Tesla is indeed actively replacing faulty drive units. However, an increased number of defective Cybertrucks could compel Tesla to issue an official recall — this time, not just software-related.
