The game Black Myth: Wukong cost the developer Game Science $42.3 million and has sold over 20 million copies at a price of $60 each. The game's budget turned out to be slightly lower than previously reported.

A report from the Zhejiang State Tax Administration in China shed light on the financial details. The estimated total budget for Black Myth was "more than 300 million yuan," which is approximately $42.3 million—less than the previously reported budget of $70 million.

However, the tax administrator points out the overall development cost, while Bloomberg once reported on the contribution of the largest external shareholder of Game Science. There aren't further specifics, so the true cost of the game likely lies somewhere between these two figures. Regardless, this achievement is remarkable compared to some modern games that pour hundreds of millions without success. The cost of labor is also a significant factor; numerous estimates indicate that the average salary of game developers in China is lower than in the USA or Europe.

Black Myth: Wukong is hailed as one of the fastest-selling games of all time after reaching 10 million copies sold in just a week. Developers and publishers celebrated the sale of 20 million copies during the recent Tokyo Game Show. The game is not only a financial success—players are also spending significant amounts of time on it. As of last month, fans averaged 27 hours of gameplay.
