In 1961, Renault launched the economical Renault 4, which became one of the company's most successful models. It remained on the market until 1994, with over 8.1 million units sold during its more than 30-year run. Now, 30 years later, the Renault 4 makes a comeback as an electric vehicle, potentially boosting sales for this model even further.

The current 2024 Renault 4 shouldn’t be considered a direct successor, as it’s no longer the spartan hatchback that some may remember from their childhood. Instead, it resembles a crossover version of the revived Renault 5. This stylish hatchback features an elevated suspension and additional plastic body cladding, which are more typical of mini crossovers. One notable feature is the electrically operated retractable fabric roof that pays homage to its aged predecessor.

The Renault 4 E-Tech appears more utilitarian than the hatchback and sports a squared-off body reminiscent of the original R4. Engineers have worked to transform the classic rounded headlights into their modern equivalents, which also feature vertical, three-component rear taillights shaped like tablets, serving as a nod to the source of inspiration. The rear door has been enlarged for added practicality, and to facilitate loading and unloading, the tailgate extends into the rear bumper. The trunk opening is just 61 cm off the ground, and the trunk itself has a capacity of 420 liters.

Measuring 4.14 meters long, the revived Renault 4 sits between the supermini Clio and the subcompact Captur crossover. It is 1.8 meters wide and 1.57 meters tall, with a ground clearance of 18.1 cm. Thus, the vehicle is larger in all dimensions compared to the new R5. The wheelbase is 2.62 meters, offering more legroom for rear passengers.

The new model features 18-inch wheels and a multi-link independent suspension both in the front and rear. Few B-class cars, especially in the mid-range, boast a multi-link rear suspension.

The dashboard includes a 10.1-inch digital driver display and a 10-inch touchscreen. Engineers have retained some physical buttons beneath the central air vents.

The Renault 4 E-Tech is based on the AmpR Small platform. It offers two powertrain options: 121 hp (90 kW) and 225 Nm of torque, and 148 hp (110 kW) with 245 Nm. The more powerful engine allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8.5 seconds, and to speed up from 80 to 120 km/h in under 7 seconds.

Two types of batteries are also available — 40 kWh and 52 kWh, providing a range of 300 km and 400 km, respectively, according to the WLTP cycle. The battery can be charged with direct current at up to 100 kW, taking half an hour to restore energy from 15% to 80%. Two-way charging at 11 kW is also supported, allowing the R4 to function as a power source.

The lightest configuration weighs a relatively modest 1410 kg. This number will increase if the larger battery and additional equipment are selected. Renault notes a maximum towing capacity of 750 kg.

After its public debut this week at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, the new R4 will be available for sale in Europe next year. The price has not yet been announced.
