According to informed sources from Asia, Apple has ordered a large quantity of capacitive button components from a supplier in Taiwan. These components are supposedly intended for use in the future series of iPhone 16 smartphones.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering has received an order for SIP modules that will be used to integrate sealing components with two Taptic Engine motors, one on each side of the iPhone. It is claimed that Apple will replace the existing physical buttons on both sides of the iPhone 15 with capacitive versions, which will provide iPhone 16 users with tactile feedback. The latter type of button detects a press and emulates the press of a physical button using a tactile (or Taptic) mechanism that generates vibration.

However, there are doubts about the capacitive buttons appearing in the iPhone 16. It was believed that the first known prototypes of the iPhone 16 included tactile power and volume buttons. However, the corresponding project was canceled in 2023 due to unresolved technical problems, and Apple reverted to mechanical buttons for the iPhone 16. Therefore, it is expected that the iPhone 16 models will have entirely mechanical buttons.

Rumors suggest that Apple will even add a new Capture Button to all iPhone 16 models, which will also be mechanical, not capacitive. At the same time, it will be able to respond to both presses and touches. The button will be used for taking photos and videos - iPhone users will be able to zoom in and out by swiping the button left and right, focus with a light press, and start recording with a stronger press.

In a new publication, it is claimed that mass production of capacitive components will begin in the third quarter of this year. This is too late in terms of the typical initial production of the iPhone. Therefore, this order may pertain to the iPhone 17 lineup, not the future models of this year.
