Apple has launched a secret ACDC project - to develop artificial intelligence chips for data centers

The Apple ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center) project has been in development at Apple for several years, however, it does not have clear timelines.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple closely collaborates with TSMC for the development and production of chips, but it is unknown if these efforts have yielded any specific results.

It is noted that Apple's server chip will focus on "AI inference" rather than training - an area currently dominated by Nvidia. Inference in artificial intelligence technologies is the process that uses trained models to make conclusions based on entirely new data.

Apple is currently lagging behind in the AI race, as competitors like Microsoft are investing billions in the technology. In February, company CEO Tim Cook stated that Apple is also investing significant resources in artificial intelligence and will make a major announcement about the technology later in 2024 (likely at WWDC in June).

"We believe in the transformative power and prospects of artificial intelligence, and believe we have advantages that will distinguish us in this new era," Cook said during Apple's last quarterly earnings report.

It is expected that at WWDC 2024, Apple will introduce a large number of features based on generative artificial intelligence with iOS 18 and other software updates. The company is also developing its own language models that can operate autonomously.

Interestingly, previous reports have shown that Apple is in talks with both OpenAI and Google regarding the use of their AI technologies in the iPhone. It is unclear whether the company still plans to enter into agreements with third parties or will instead use its own servers.
