As expected, a significant portion of the announcements at Apple WWDC 2024 was dedicated to artificial intelligence, although the company refrained from using the term itself and instead used "Apple Intelligence" when talking about machine learning-based features.
When ChatGPT "took over" the world in 2022, followed by Google and Microsoft, Apple was playing catch-up, and is finally ready to rectify the situation.
Apple Intelligence
Apple says that AI features will work for you in programs: they will manage notifications, write or summarize text in emails (with the option to choose the message tone), or pass tasks "from app to app" (for example, you can ask AI to play the podcast sent to you in the messenger).
The company notes that all AI features will be processed on the device to maintain privacy (you will need an A17 Pro or M series chip to take advantage), but there is a so-called "semantic index" that will collect personal data when needed and display it in applications.
In the future, artificial intelligence features may be moved to what Apple calls a "private cloud" — although this data will not be stored on servers, and the company adds that it will not have access to it (independent experts will verify Apple's statements).
Finally, smart Siri
Apple says that in iOS 18, users will be able to speak to Siri in natural language or enter text with commands, and the assistant now seems to be able to understand context (taking into account previous actions).
Siri will have a new feature to perform actions in apps for you — for example, you can ask it to take a selfie when you are looking at the camera, and then save and send it to a friend. The assistant will be able to search in the gallery (to find, for example, photos of documents), copy information from an image (such as an ID number) and paste it into the required web form.
Text writing, Genmoji, and Image Playground
In Mail, when composing a message, you can ask Siri to write it for you and change the tone if necessary (and such options are available everywhere in the system where text can be entered).
Apple has also added the "Genmoji" feature, which will instantly generate emoji-like reactions, and the image creation tool called Image Playground (the feature works both as a standalone app and is available in several others).
AI will also appear in the Photos app — you can search for objects in the library, or use features similar to Google's Magic Eraser, for example, the ability to erase something from a photo.
Apple's agreement with OpenAI exists
ChatGPT 4o will appear on iOS, macOS, and iPadOS "later this year" as a chatbot that Siri can turn to... when it cannot perform your task. Apple has stated that they are starting with the best chatbot, but will later support other AI models.
