At the WWDC 2024 conference, Apple announced watchOS 11 - the latest version of its smartwatch OS.
Like in previous presentations, watchOS adds new health features: this year we will get a workout mode that uses personal data and metrics to see how the intensity and duration of workouts affect your body over time. You can also activate "effort estimation", which will help you understand whether to intensify your workouts or vice versa weaken them; "rest days", which allow you to take a break on the activity rings; and workout goal settings depending on the day of the week.
Through watchOS 11, Apple is introducing a new app called Vitals, which allows you to familiarize yourself with "important health indicators" and new pregnancy cycle tracking features. The app will also notify you when certain indicators, such as heart rate, go beyond your normal range.
The update will also move the Live Activities feature from the iPhone to the Apple Watch. New security features will also be introduced (for example, if you are out running late at night, your friends will be able to keep an eye on you). Similar security features were introduced on the Pixel Watch 2 last year.
Last year, Apple introduced interactive notifications as part of a major redesign - watchOS 11 will also display translations or weather widgets when it deems necessary.
Developers can start working with watchOS 11 today, while the public release is scheduled for the fall - to coincide with the launch of the new Apple Watch. This year, Apple's smartwatches will celebrate their 10th anniversary and there are rumors that a special "X" version may be released, similar to what happened with the iPhone.
