Google has released Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, now available for Pixel smartphones. The new OS version introduces several engaging features.

This is a quarterly release, which typically brings more new elements compared to monthly bug fixes. QPR versions are relatively stable builds and are launched as betas rather than developer previews. Google officially states that they are suitable for general use. The final version of Android 15 QPR1 is set to launch in December.

Desktop Mode with Traditional Windows for Tablets

Google has been working on implementing desktop windowing for some time, and this mode finally debuts on tablets with Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2. Windows allow multiple applications to run simultaneously, and they can be moved and resized. By default, windows feature full-screen and close buttons. The top right of the window includes a title, application icon, and settings arrow.

By default, all apps launch in full-screen mode. The separate window mode can be enabled in settings under the developer options. This allows a "handle" to appear on the upper panel for moving windows. This control lets you toggle between full-screen, split-screen, and windowed modes. Pressing and holding will enable viewing of running windows.

Tablets now feature a fixed taskbar that shows running applications — these can be pinned, and the taskbar itself can be hidden. Combined with an attached keyboard, it supports shortcut keys like (Windows, Command, or Search) + Ctrl+Down.

Widgets Return to the Tablet Lock Screen

Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 reintroduces support for widgets on the lock screen, at least for tablets. This feature was previously launched four years ago but subsequently removed. Even earlier, Google supported lock screen widgets on phones in Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

Thanks to a panel on the right side, the lock screen can display widgets from any compatible apps that can be accessed without fully unlocking the tablet. Widgets for Spotify, Google Clock, Google Home, and Pixel Weather are available, with the option to choose any Android widgets.

The OS displays a notification stating that while widgets will appear correctly before unlocking, the user must authenticate via biometrics or PIN/password to access the full app. Additionally, in the lock screen system settings, the widget functionality can be completely disabled.

Other New Features in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2

The keyboard has received a new layout switching mode.

Color correction has introduced an intensity adjustment slider.

Screen recording and casting modes have been redesigned.

The system settings app has also received a new look.

Moreover, the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 build includes numerous fixes for issues from the previous version and enhancements for better stability.
