AMD processors with 3D V-Cache are recognized as the top choice for gaming; however, no chip with a powerful integrated GPU (APU) has been equipped with it yet. This may change in the next generation.
Zhangzhonghao, a well-known hardware informant from Chiphell, states that settings related to 3D V-Cache have been mentioned in the manual for an ASUS WRX90 motherboard. These boards do not officially support Ryzen or EPYC processors. Thus, the insider speculates that Threadripper chips will receive the 3D V-Cache. Until now, no AMD Threadripper HEDT processor has featured the enhanced L3 cache.
The source also indicates that custom processors with advanced integrated graphics will benefit from 3D V-Cache. However, he mentions that initially, this feature may be confined to high-end laptops and won’t be included in desktop chips. Here’s what was reported:
“Today I saw news that the term Vcache appeared in the BIOS instruction for Asus TRX motherboards, and then I asked suppliers if this would actually happen. Furthermore, the next generation is set to add 3D to APU (to enhance CPU and GPU). The technology and costs are already in place, but current news indicates that this is limited to laptops and only at the Halo level.”
AMD's 3D V-Cache technology and processors equipped with it, such as the X3D models, have primarily demonstrated their performance in gaming. The upcoming new processors are expected to showcase their effectiveness in server and computational workloads, as well as in high-end thin laptops. Desktop users are currently looking forward to the new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which will be officially available tomorrow, November 7.
