YouTube announced that creators can now independently label videos that contain artificial or AI-generated materials.
The corresponding checkbox appears during the upload and publishing process of the video. Creators must specify "altered or synthetic" content that looks realistic. This applies to things like forcing a real person to say or do something they did not say or do; altering frames of real events and places; showing a "realistic scene" that never actually happened. Some examples provided by YouTube include showing a fake tornado heading towards a real city, or using deepfakes to make a real person speak in the video.
At the same time, it is not necessary to flag the presence of things like beauty filters, special effects such as background blur, and "obviously unrealistic content," such as animation.
Like other platforms that have introduced content labels for artificial intelligence, YouTube's feature relies on a system of trust - creators must be honest about what appears in their videos. YouTube spokesperson Jack Melon previously stated that the company is "investing in tools" to detect content created by artificial intelligence, although software for detecting artificial intelligence has historically been very inaccurate.
YouTube also states that it may add disclosure of artificial intelligence to videos, even if the user who uploaded it did not do so themselves. This is especially relevant in cases "if altered or synthetic content can confuse or deceive people." More prominent disclosures will also appear on the video itself for sensitive topics such as health, elections, and finances.
