Windows Subsystem for Linux will get a graphical interface

It should be noted that we are not talking about the graphical interface of Linux in Windows, but about the implementation of some functions of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in the interface of the Microsoft OS. The company has created a graphical implementation of some tools for managing Linux distributions, in particular the choice and launching.

Microsoft added the Windows subsystem for Linux so that anyone could run a Linux distribution directly from Windows. Thanks to WSL, you don't need to separately download Linux or create a virtual machine, but this function is limited only to the Windows terminal. Microsoft has created a graphical interface for managing Linux distributions.

Microsoft quietly published a proposal to enhance WSL on GitHub. The company requested suggestions for using the Dev Home program to manage all installed Linux distributions. Microsoft shared a screenshot demonstrating what the graphical interface for managing Linux distributions could look like. Thanks to the graphical interface, users will be able to view installed distributions and easily access them.

The user interface layout shows a new tab in the Dev Home application called Windows Subsystem for Linux. The section displays all installed distributions with several configuration parameters. It contains current system statistics for the distribution in use. You can also start a specific distribution on behalf of a particular user.

There are also buttons to stop the current use of the distribution or launch another one. The context menu allows you to remove the distribution, set it as the default choice, or move it to another location. You can also add a new distribution by clicking the "+ Add" button in the upper right corner. The option to disable WSL is also available on the top panel, making it easy to turn off this feature.

The integration of WSL into the Windows graphical interface seems well thought out. Developers plan to add an option to mount a disk formatted for Linux and display the hardware usage of WSL VM for each distribution. There will also be an option to import and export distributions.
