Intel's Vice President confirms that the launch of the Core Ultra 200S processors did not go as expected. The company promises to address performance issues by early December.

In an interview with Hot Hardware, Robert Hallock elaborated on the challenges faced by Intel's Core Ultra 200 processors. He mentioned that Intel conducted an extensive investigation following the launch of the Arrow Lake chips. The company found that, in certain configurations, performance data significantly deviated from Intel’s official results and did not meet expectations, adversely impacting sales. Remedies for these issues are currently in preparation.

According to Intel, under specific conditions, some systems may experience performance drops. The more of these factors coincide, the worse the system performs. This includes not only memory latency—though Intel noted that sometimes the latency exceeds 180 nanoseconds, while they had anticipated a maximum of 80 ns.

“I think people will be interested to know what happened. I can’t go into all the details yet, but we identified a series of multifactorial issues at the OS level, at the BIOS level, and I must say that the performance we saw in reviews (not due to the reviewers’ fault) was not what we expected and planned. The launch simply didn’t go as we intended. This was a humbling lesson for all of us, which triggered a strong internal response to understand the essence of what transpired and to correct it.”

Certain BIOS versions or system settings may contribute to reduced performance, and Intel is currently investigating this matter. Hallock did not specify what exactly is at issue or what fixes to expect. He noted that patches will be released by the end of this month.
