Intel has dominated the PC processor market for many years. However, in the past year, the balance has been shifting towards AMD, as new statistics indicate.

According to research firm Mercury Research, the market for desktop processors is undergoing a rapid transformation: in the third quarter of 2024, AMD's share of desktop PC chips reached 28.7% by unit count and 27.3% by revenue. Compared to the previous quarter, the increase in processor units was 5.7%. When compared to the same period last year, the growth is a dramatic 9.5%.

The nearly 10% annual growth is attributed to the popularity of AMD's Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors. Meanwhile, Intel's 13th and 14th generation processors have faced stability issues, and the new generation had a particularly poor launch, soon to receive patches aimed at enhancing performance. Interestingly, Intel attributes its reduced share to inventory corrections rather than competitive pressures.

Additionally, AMD claims a 22.3% share of the laptop processor market and 24.2% in the server segment. The quarterly revenue of AMD's data center division reached $3.549 billion, marking a new record for the company and surpassing Intel's current share. Just a decade ago, AMD was hardly represented in data centers at all. Thanks to significant sales of EPYC processors for cloud providers and Instinct MI300X for artificial intelligence, AMD has gained substantial profits.

Despite these changes and setbacks, Intel continues to dominate client computing with a 76.1% share of the PC market. Major OEM partners like Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others largely rely on Intel when selecting processors for major clients, such as educational institutions, government agencies, and more.
