Samsung discusses the use of Galaxy Flip smartphones by law enforcement agencies as body cameras. The implementation of these advanced mobile devices was part of a pilot program in the police departments of Kimberling and Indian Point two years ago to evaluate how technology could enhance daily operations.
According to Samsung, this marks the first instance of a folding device being utilized by police as a body camera. Following the completion of the pilot program, two additional police departments agreed to adopt the Flip as a body camera. The insights gained from these pilot tests will also be extended to 25 departments across five states.
The Samsung Galaxy Flip smartphones were configured in collaboration with Visual Labs, a company that repurposes mobile devices for use as body and recording cameras. Samsung stated that modifications, such as reprogramming the volume button to activate the camera, aimed to facilitate and expedite video recording in the field.
“The Galaxy Flip also serves as a digital camera necessary for capturing evidence at crime scenes, a recording device for interviewing witnesses, and a staff identifier to track an officer’s location using GPS.”
The smartphone, of course, also allows for phone calls, sending emails, and text messaging. It can support additional functionalities such as computer dispatching, queries to criminal justice databases, and even a push-to-talk radio mode, which significantly aids in operational efficiency.
