The updated ranking of the best car brands by sales for the first 8 months of 2024 shows a significant surge for the Chinese brand BYD. It demonstrates the highest growth rates among the top 10 automotive brands. The report is based on an analysis of data from transportation ministries or their equivalents across 159 markets worldwide.

Throughout the first months of 2024, Japanese brand Toyota remains the top seller. It has held the number one position for the past 10 years. This year, the brand has managed to sell 5.99 million vehicles, which is a 0.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

In second place, with nearly double the gap, is Volkswagen, having sold 3.22 million cars (+1.8%). The company commands 5.9% of the global car market.

Honda claimed the third position, rising 2 spots, with a total of 2.47 million units sold and a growth of 2% compared to the previous year.

Ford secured the fourth spot, selling 2.46 million cars (-0.1%). Following closely is Hyundai, which dropped 2 positions, with sales of 2.42 million (-2.6%).

Another notable shift in the top 10 best car brands is the performance of BYD. Although the company emphasizes electric vehicles, it also sells internal combustion engine models, which account for over half of its sales. This diversification enabled BYD to sell 1.99 million vehicles, marking a 24% increase in sales. In 2019, this brand ranked 49th in the world.

Kia fell to the 9th position, losing one spot, with sales of 1.89 million vehicles (-3.2%). Closing the top 10 is BMW, which moved up one position with 1.51 million new registrations (+6.7%).
