At Gamescom 2024, Bethesda unveiled the first expansion for Starfield — Shattered Space. With this addition, players received a vehicle for traversing planets, a development spearheaded by Phil Spencer himself.
The Rev-8 buggy is available to all players and is reminiscent of the "Mako" from Mass Effect, featuring a mounted machine gun. Starfield is filled with enormous planets, which can be incredibly tedious to explore on foot. It's also puzzling that an interstellar civilization lacks vehicles. As a result, apart from the jetpack, travelers have no other means of assistance. Todd Howard previously mentioned:
“In some ways, you do have a vehicle—in that you obviously have a spaceship, allowing you to travel through space. But on the surface, you have a jetpack that you can upgrade, which is a lot of fun and a new experience for us.”
This explanation did not satisfy anyone. Even Xbox head Phil Spencer was among those who remained unconvinced. At Gamescom, Spencer noted that his presence there hindered him from trying out the Rev-8:
“I asked Todd for vehicles. ‘Come on, Todd, I want cars in this game. I'm tired of walking around this planet.’ I thought the trailer from last night looked great, so I can't wait to drive around the planets in Starfield.”
It’s great when game developers listen to players. But it works best when the player happens to be their boss. It makes one wonder how many times Phil Spencer reminded Todd Howard about the need for vehicles.
The Rev-8 vehicle is now available in the game, while the DLC Shattered Space will launch on September 30. The Rev-8 buggy appears several times in its trailer, so there will be plenty of opportunities for driving.
