The Verge's technology publication published an article in early April entitled "Best printer of 2024," which is still the top result on Google for the query "best printer." In reality, this material, created by Google Gemini language model and SEO-optimized, is an experiment and an example of how technology can outsmart attempts by people to create quality content.
Even the cover image of the article in low resolution contradicts everything known about image attractiveness. But this does not stop Google from ranking the material highly in search results.
The article claims that "the best printer is any random Brother laser printer that is on sale." Hardly anyone would agree with such a statement, maybe not everyone has even heard of this brand.
Google often emphasizes that writing should be for people, not for search engines. However, such materials indicate that thanks to generation and optimization, it is still possible to effectively bypass the hours of work and research of people who strive to create interesting and useful content.
Even the headline "Best printer 2024, best printer for home use, office use, printing labels, printer for school, homework printer you are a printer we are all printers" at first glance seems to be nothing more than aggressively optimized word selection. Not to mention the expression "you are a printer, and we are all printers too."
This is not the first attempt by The Verge: a similar article was published last year and was also successful. However, at that time, half of the text was created by another AI model, ChatGPT.
