Free mods are great, but developing them incurs costs. The creators of Fallout London aim to establish their own gaming studio.
Despite being described by the developer as being "held together with tape," Fallout London is an exciting and large-scale project. Following the success of Fallout London, its developers have ambitious plans for the future. In a BBC interview, Dean Carter from Team Folon expressed interest in transforming the team that achieved this into a real indie studio.
“As much as I appreciate that it's a free project… being free doesn't pay our bills. What has been wonderful for us is that many people who enjoyed it have made donations… What we've done with that is we have redirected it to the Folon team: this is what we plan to pursue, and then we hopefully plan to launch our own indie game company.”
For legal reasons, it's not possible to directly ask for money for the mod without agreements with the game's rights holder and listing in an official store. On the other hand, donations are easier to accept and use.
As Carter mentioned earlier in the interview, the team hasn’t received any feedback from Bethesda: “We don’t expect anything from them; we’re just fans of the project, and it’s their IP, but there has been no communication. It’s strange because we’ve spoken with others in the industry… but Bethesda themselves haven’t reached out to us at all.”
Dean Carter enthusiastically discusses the prospect of having their own business. This would allow the team to realize their own ideas, create their own game, and directly engage with users. However, developing games takes years, and transitioning from a mod to full game development is a monumental task.
