A new report from analytics firm IDC indicates that in the third quarter of 2024, global tablet sales reached 39.6 million units. This marks a 20.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

Apple continues to lead the tablet market with 12.6 million units shipped, accounting for a 31.7% market share. While shipments grew by 1.4% compared to the third quarter of 2023, Apple's actual market share declined from 37.7% a year ago.

Despite Apple's dominance, other brands are experiencing faster growth. Samsung ranked second with 7.1 million units sold and a market share of 17.9%. The Korean giant recorded an 18.3% increase in sales, although its share fell from 18.2% last year.

Amazon secured third place with 4.6 million tablets shipped and an 11.6% market share, showcasing an impressive sales increase of 111.3%.

Huawei also saw remarkable growth of 44.1%. The company now holds an 8.2% market share with 3.3 million tablet shipments (up from 6.9% and 2.3 million in the same period last year).

Closing out the top five is Lenovo with 3 million shipments and a 7.6% market share. Although sales increased from 2.6 million in the third quarter of 2023, its market share declined from 8%.

Thus, the main winners of this quarter were Amazon and Huawei. Additionally, considerable sales of 9.1 million tablets came from other brands, which collectively hold 22.9% of the market.

According to IDC, sales of the new Apple iPad Air benefited from the back-to-school season, while the new iPad Pro underperformed due to its high price for emerging markets. Samsung's sales were driven by the budget Galaxy Tab A9 series rather than the premium Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra models. In contrast, Amazon's growth was primarily fueled by sales during Prime Day. Huawei's main device was the MatePad SE 11, while Lenovo's increase was supported by markets in China and Western Europe.
