The Lexar Professional SD 8.0 memory card is excessively fast for all modern devices, and none can fully utilize its maximum speed.

This new SD card offers read and write speeds of up to 1700 MB/s and 1000 MB/s, respectively. It is ahead of its time, as it is not entirely compatible with cameras or any other devices that use this format. In practical application, speeds are likely to be reduced to the UHS-I standard.

Recently, Lexar launched a series of flash-based cards, including stainless steel Gold and Silver Pro variants that meet UHS-II requirements. However, the SD 8.0 standard utilizes PCIe 4.0 lanes to achieve speeds of up to 2 GB/s.

Only card readers or cameras that comply with the SD 8.0 standard can achieve the full speed of the Lexar Professional SD 8.0. However, none exist yet, as the standard was finalized only a month ago. The SD 8.0 standard is designed for use with PCIe: PCIe Gen 4 x1, PCIe G3 x2, or PCIe Gen4 x2. The SD card will function with existing cameras and devices, but with corresponding limitations.

It seems likely that Lexar introduced the SD 8.0 card to showcase its performance as a concept. No other storage manufacturer has demonstrated SD 8.0 cards yet. The fact is, the standard essentially corresponds to SD Express, a high-speed memory card standard that has yet to gain industry support.

High-speed storage is crucial for cameras due to the large file sizes of 8K RAW videos or high-resolution images. However, file processing cannot be accelerated as of now. It’s uncertain whether such devices will be released in the near future. Despite the announcement, the card is not listed on the Lexar website, while their new UHS-II SDXC cards are available.
