Reddit has published a video (now deleted) featuring a too confident driver attempting to demonstrate the capabilities of Full Self-Driving (FSD) in his Tesla. However, just a few seconds after expressing admiration for the car's capabilities, he has to intervene when the car turns directly into oncoming traffic.
"Ultimately, you don't need maps, you don't need to know where you are down to the centimeter," boasted the driver to his friend. "You just need really good AI, really good intelligence."
"All the extra equipment to start Waymo..." he added, before exclaiming "damn!" as his car turned left into oncoming traffic.
Although the driver managed to react in time and turn the wheel to the right, it is another sign that the so-called Tesla "autonomous driving" technology is still extremely imperfect - especially in combination with overly confident users.
Even though a crash was narrowly avoided, the driver did not seem upset.
"This car can work quite well, even without any of this," he concluded after taking control.
The driver's comments underscore how convincing Tesla CEO Elon Musk's statements have been that autonomous vehicles do not need any other sensors aside from a set of cameras.
Musk has long claimed that autonomous vehicles do not need LIDAR or other advanced sensors for successful and safe navigation on city streets. This approach significantly differs from competing companies, such as Waymo.
Musk has repeatedly promised significant breakthroughs with each iteration of his company's controversial FSD software. He is also notorious for promising every year that Tesla will release autonomous vehicles. This has been going on for about 10 years.
But, as the video demonstrates, Tesla still has a lot of work to do before these promises become reality.
