Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, the mind behind iconic gaming franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Pikmin, objected when referred to as a genius.
Miyamoto was described as a genius by a Nintendo investor. The investor inquired about how the company would nurture the creativity and methods of the 71-year-old creator once he eventually retires. The game designer dismissed this "title," stating that new Nintendo employees often describe him as "astonishingly normal," a sentiment he agrees with.
"I think I am quite an ordinary person. If possible, I would prefer not to work at all, but if I am going to work, I want to do it as efficiently as possible. I am always thinking about how to make what I am working on a hit—if I make a hit, it will make my next job easier. Each year, I talk about these creative dilemmas at a seminar [for new employees]," says Miyamoto.
Additionally, Miyamoto elaborated on these seminars, which reflect his own game development philosophy. It is such ideas that motivated Miyamoto to develop some of the most beloved games of all time, including Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 64, and many others.
"Among game developers who have just joined Nintendo, there are many who often play games themselves. They would like to create a better version of the last game they played. However, I explain to them that game design is not about that. It’s about looking at the world around you and combining aspects that you think would be interesting in a video game."
Nintendo is currently on the brink of announcing a new Switch, for which Shigeru Miyamoto has been actively involved in its creation. Little is known about the console, but Nintendo has confirmed that it will be backwards compatible with Switch games.
