LG Display has unveiled a prototype display that expands by up to 50%. As noted by Tom's Hardware, this is the world's largest "stretchable" display, significantly surpassing the previous record of 20%.
The prototype, shown in the image below, features a 12-inch screen that can be expanded to 18 inches without any loss of image quality at a resolution of 100 pixels per inch.
Moreover, unlike other concepts, LG's display can be bent, folded, and transformed into various shapes. Overall, the screen can be stretched "up to 10,000 times without any damage."
According to LG, the technology is based on a "special silicone material" commonly used in contact lenses, although it has been enhanced for greater flexibility. Additionally, the company incorporated a new wiring structure and a microLED light source.
In the future, this technology could be applied in fashion design, touch panels for electric vehicles, and more. LG also showcased a concept where the stretchable display is directly attached to a firefighter's uniform, displaying real-time information.
