Sony has achieved significant success, having sold over 61 million PlayStation 5 consoles, yet the company has experienced a 32% decline in hardware sales compared to last year.
In its latest financial report, Sony revealed details regarding PlayStation 5 console sales. In the last quarter, the company sold 2.4 million units, which is considerably lower than the 3.3 million sold during the same period in 2023 and 4.5 million in the previous quarter.
Despite the drop in hardware sales, Sony reported a 12% rise in overall revenue from its gaming segment year-on-year. This increase contributed to a 33% growth in profit.
The company attributes this success to two key factors. First, revenue from software rose by 18%. Second, earnings from network services, primarily PlayStation Plus, increased by 25%.
Sony has not disclosed the exact number of PlayStation Plus subscribers. However, the company does report the monthly active users on PlayStation Network, which currently stands at 116 million, up by 8 million from last year. This number, however, is slightly lower than the 118 million users recorded in the previous quarter.
Interestingly, the number of games sold actually decreased by 5% compared to last year. The increase in revenue and profit can be attributed to the rising prices of games.
In the reporting quarter, Sony launched an exclusive game for the PS5 called Stellar Blade. According to developer ShiftUp, one million copies of the game were sold by the end of June.
In comparison with competitors, Nintendo sold 2.1 million Switch consoles during the same period. While Sony has sold more PS5 units, the Switch trails not too far behind, considering that this is already the seventh year since the console's release.
