According to the Polish Economic Institute, approximately 59,800 active Ukrainian sole proprietorships (JDG) were established in Poland over the past two and a half years (from January 2022 to June 2024). This timeframe closely coincides with the duration of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
In the first half of 2024, Ukrainian citizens started more than one out of every ten businesses in Poland (11.2%). Furthermore, 77% of active recently registered foreign-owned businesses in Poland were operated by Ukrainians.
Ukrainian entrepreneurs in Poland predominantly open businesses in the following sectors:
- Construction (23%),
- Information and communication (19%),
- Other service industries (12%).
Ukrainian men in Poland are most likely to establish enterprises related to construction (34%), information and communication (23%), and transportation and warehousing (11%).
Almost one-third of the enterprises run by Ukrainian women in Poland are engaged in other service activities (30%). Information, communication, and trade account for 11% of the companies founded by Ukrainian women. The number of Ukrainian women involved in information and communication activities is four times greater than that of Ukrainian men (2,274 compared to 603).
Running a business in Poland serves as an alternative to paid employment for many Ukrainians. By the end of June 2024, the number of insured Ukrainian citizens was around 771,000, of which nearly 739,000 worked as employees or under civil contracts or agency agreements. In June 2023, about 748,000 Ukrainians were insured, reflecting a 3% increase compared to the previous year.
