Blizzard has long wished to create a new RTS in the Starcraft or Warcraft series, but the management has not allowed it. This was revealed by a well-known gaming journalist.
It seems that Activision is no longer interested in the real-time strategies that established Blizzard's name. According to developers, a new Warcraft 4 or Starcraft could have been released by now, but management did not permit it.
This information comes from Jason Schreier, who is currently on a promotional tour for his new book titled “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment.” On the World of Warcraft subreddit, he reveals a behind-the-scenes story that may break the hearts of RTS fans:
“[Tim] Morten and his team have been trying for years to launch a new RTS, doing various presentations and prototypes, ranging from Warcraft 4 to even Call of Duty RTS (he was desperate).”
Schreier talks about the director of production for Starcraft 2, who left Blizzard in 2019 to work on Stormgate. The game was released in early access in August and received mixed reviews. However, the journalist points to Warcraft 3: Reforged as a kind of final attempt to prove to the executives that RTS has potential — but as we all know, that ended poorly.
“Reforged turned out to be a fiasco — the company's first bad game and a stain on Blizzard's history. So in 2020, Morten and part of his team left to form Frost Giant (and recently released Stormgate).”
The idea of persuading the new management to produce an RTS after the change of ownership might seem promising. However, any attempts to do so have not yet been documented.
