It blends classic RPG elements with social simulator aspects. Players take control of teenagers with supernatural powers who battle demons in modern Japan. The series gained popularity due to its unique gameplay, profound narratives, and stylish design, becoming one of the most influential JRPG franchises., Atlus studio, has received acclaim from critics who praised its rich storyline and innovative gameplay. Metaphor: ReFantazio has achieved an average score of 92% on Metacritic for the PC version and 94% for PlayStation 5. On the OpenCritic aggregator, the game holds a rating of 92%.

Leading gaming publications have awarded the game top scores. GameSpot and VGC rated Metaphor: ReFantazio 10/10 and 5/5 respectively, while Eurogamer also bestowed a perfect score of 5/5. GamesRadar scored the game 4.5/5, and IGN gave it 9/10.

Critics particularly highlighted the developers' approach to addressing themes of racial and political oppression. GameSpot remarked:

“Metaphor showcases Atlus at its best and most genuine. It is a game that reminds you of the idealist within, the person you aspire to be, and how fantasy can shape reality.”

Reviewers have compared Metaphor: ReFantazio to Persona 5, especially regarding the social connection system. Lewis Parker in his review for PC Gamer described the game as “primarily a social simulator, and only afterwards a turn-based RPG.” Michael Gaim from IGN noted that the Bond/Follower and Royal Virtue systems are improved adaptations of the social links and traits from Persona.

Despite the overall praise, the game has also faced some criticism. Ed Thorn from Rock Paper Shotgun expressed a more lukewarm view of Metaphor: ReFantazio, criticizing the excessive focus on the combat system and comparing the game's seriousness to the more relaxed tone of Persona.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is set to be released on October 11, 2024. Players can add the game to their wish list on Steam or try out the demo version.
