A Reddit user shared a screenshot where ChatGPT unexpectedly initiated a conversation by asking about the first week of school, leading to a flurry of comments and discussions online. Typically, users are the ones who start the conversation with the chatbot.

Reddit user SentuBill posted a snapshot of his chat with ChatGPT. The image shows the AI asking, "How was your first week of high school? Are you settling in well?" The surprised user responded with, "Did you just message me first?" (here's the link to the conversation). ChatGPT confirmed that it indeed started the dialogue, explaining that it wanted to learn about the user's impressions of their first week at school.

The post, published on September 15, quickly gained traction, receiving nearly 7,000 likes (9,600 at the time of writing) and numerous comments. The internet community's reaction was mixed.

One user shared a similar experience:

“This happened to me this week! Last week, I asked about some health symptoms. This week, it reached out to check on my well-being and how the symptoms were developing! I was shocked.”

Another commenter expressed a positive view of the new feature: “Honestly, I was waiting for this.” Some users noted that they appreciate when someone shows interest in them, even if it's artificial intelligence.

Some participants in the discussion offered technical speculations about the new feature. One commenter observed:

“It seems like quite a straightforward feature — to analyze the user's search history, identify key topics, and suggest conversation starters. The developers likely waited until they had enough user data to implement such a feature.”

As a reminder, earlier this year, ChatGPT received "memory," which may be linked to such unexpected messages from the chatbot.
