Recently, screenshots featuring peculiar suggestions from Siri circulated on social media, where it unexpectedly prompted iPhone users to call… their exes.
“This just happened to me. We haven’t spoken; she lives hundreds of miles away. I accidentally accepted the suggestion, and it made me uncomfortable,” wrote a user on the r/iPhone subreddit.
Similar reports have emerged on various forums:
“I was just tapping my iPhone 13 Pro Max, and suddenly Siri suggested I get in touch with my ex. The thing is, we aren’t talking right now, and there were no similar suggestions for other contacts.”
Many users have reached out to customer support asking how to disable this feature. However, Apple has yet to respond to these inquiries.
What’s the issue? Last year, Apple introduced a new safety feature called “Check In,” which allows users to notify selected contacts that they have arrived at their destination. However, one of the updates caused Siri to automatically suggest random people, including exes, for check-ins when previously this option was only available manually.
Most suggestions actually make sense: typically, it prompts spouses, parents, and similar contacts. It seemed that selections were based on communication frequency or emergency contacts, but this isn't the case:
“My mom wasn’t my emergency contact,” said The Verge reporter Kylie Robinson in a comment to Business Insider. “I message her, but apparently, that’s not considered active communication?”
Robinson remains puzzled about why she receives suggestions to text her mom at 1:30 AM.
In reality, disabling this feature is quite straightforward: you just need to deactivate “Siri Suggestions” in Messages and Maps; however, there is a downside as this will also disable other useful options of the smart assistant.
