Google has announced Pixel Studio — a new application for generating images using artificial intelligence, which will operate offline on the Pixel 9 smartphone line.
Pixel Studio utilizes text prompts to create images. In addition to basic image generation, the application offers editing tools that allow users to adjust the position of objects or remove them from the frame. Depending on the prompt, the program may also suggest various artistic styles, such as cinematic or anime.
Unlike many popular AI-based image generators that require expensive monthly subscriptions, Pixel Studio will not charge extra fees after purchasing the Pixel 9 smartphone. It is still unclear whether the application will be available for older Pixel models.
The core of Pixel Studio is built on Google's proprietary model — Imagen 3. This technology, similar to Midjourney and other image generators, employs machine learning to convert text prompts into visual representations.
It is worth noting that even the new Tensor G4 processor in the Pixel 9 smartphones cannot match the power of specialized cloud AI hardware. Therefore, Pixel Studio likely uses a scaled-down version of Imagen 3, much like Gemini Nano is a simplified version of larger models.
For higher-quality results, users can still utilize the Gemini overlay on mobile devices and ask a chatbot to generate an image. This feature is available on all devices but requires an internet connection.
Google also announced enhancements to the Gemini overlay, allowing users to drag AI-generated images directly into emails or chats.
The announcement of Pixel Studio came shortly after Apple revealed its own image generator for iPhone called Image Playground. This application is expected to launch alongside other Apple Intelligence features aimed at competing with various aspects of Google Gemini.
