The programming language Rust is becoming increasingly popular among developers: although it ranks only 14th in prevalence, it is taking the 1st place in popularity growth.
This is reported by The Next Web, citing data from the annual Stack Overflow developer survey and the PYPL programming language popularity index.
More than 80% of developers who have worked with Rust stated that they want to use this programming language next year.
According to this data, Rust's popularity has grown the most in the last 5 years - by 2.1%.
PYPL is created by analyzing how often tutorials for a specific programming language are searched for on Google.
History of Rust Creation
Rust was created by Mozilla programmer Graydon Hoare in 2006. The inspiration came to the developer after the elevator in a multi-storey building broke down, forcing him to climb all the way up to the 21st floor.
Graydon realized that such situations usually arise due to memory problems.
That's why he was inspired and wrote a small code, naming it Rust - in honor of a group of disease-causing fungi that are "simply made for survival".
The first version of Rust was launched in 2015, and since then it has only been gaining popularity.
AI Factor
One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of Rust can be attributed to the rapid development of AI.
The GitHub Octoverse report notes that the total number of projects with generative artificial intelligence compared to 2023 has increased by 248%, and the participants in such projects have increased by 148%.
Rust is well suited for AI applications, as it prioritizes performance and security without compromising speed. For example, in 2020, Discord developers rewrote one of their systems in Rust and found that it now runs 10 times faster.
It is also used for a variety of applications in web development, systems programming, game development, and databases.
