A Reddit user shared photos of their AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor showing significant damage. Along with the chip, the MSI Tomahawk X870 motherboard was also rendered inoperable.

It’s difficult to ascertain whether the processor was indeed the cause of the damage. The user left minimal comments, so we can only analyze the images and draw from experiences with previous AMD chip generations. In spring 2023, there were reports of burnt Ryzen 7000X3D processors, attributed to excessive voltage coming from the motherboard. Subsequent AGESA microcode updates seemed to resolve the issue, and no similar incidents have been reported since.

The photos depict the Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor with scorched contact pads and a burnt AM5 socket on the MSI Tomahawk X870 motherboard. It appears that the socket itself is physically damaged, potentially interfering with the proper installation of the processor. This perspective is shared by several commenters on the photos, and the owner of the damaged hardware concurs.

Currently, there is only one reported case, and no clear evidence points to the processor being at fault in this incident. However, the fact remains that both the chip and the motherboard are inoperable. Any unfavorable conditions that contributed to this issue could theoretically be replicated. At the very least, it’s advisable to thoroughly inspect the physical condition of the socket before installing a processor.

The good news is that Steve Burke from Gamers Nexus has already offered to purchase the processor from the owner, so a detailed investigation can be expected. Given the circumstances, the ultimate explanation may be straightforward.
