"But we're better than Google and OpenAI, aren't we?": Meta gets in the way of training its AI on Facebook and Instagram posts

The Meta Corporation has announced that starting today, it will begin training its AI on posts on Facebook and Instagram that were published by citizens of the UK or EU countries.

However, not everyone agrees with this, reports SkyNews.

Legal problems have hit Meta, especially in Ireland. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has asked the tech giant to postpone training of large language models. Meta's Director of Privacy Policy, Stefano Fratta, has already called this a "disappointment."

Meta hopes to resolve the issue during the summer.

Things are not smooth sailing in the EU either. The European group Noyb, which defends digital rights, has also filed complaints, stating that Meta's innovations "violate the fundamental right to data protection and privacy of European users."

Following the information about the suspension of AI training on Facebook and Instagram posts, Meta provided a comment, mentioning Google and OpenAI.

"We are following the example of others, notably Google and OpenAI, who have already used data from Europeans to train artificial intelligence. Our approach is more transparent and offers more regulatory options," the company said.

Users in the European Union and the UK are protected by a number of laws and have the right to refuse any use of their data.

Users are likely to receive an email or notification from Meta and will be given the opportunity to object before the changes take effect. Meta states that it "will consider requests in accordance with existing data protection laws."

It is reported that due to the relevant collisions, the company has postponed the release of Meta AI in Europe.
