The Avon and Somerset police department in the southwest of England is testing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system that could assist in solving cold cases, reducing decades of investigative work to just a few hours. This was reported by Sky News.

The system, named Soze and developed in Australia, scans emails, social media messages, videos, financial records, and various other documents. However, the accuracy of this platform remains uncertain, raising concerns as AI models often produce incorrect results or fabricated information.

According to Sky News, the AI analyzed evidence from 27 "complex" cases in approximately 30 hours. This is equivalent to 81 years of human labor. Such impressive figures have piqued the interest of law enforcement officials who often face staffing and budget constraints.

The chair of the National Police Chiefs' Council in the UK, Gavin Stephens, commented on the potential of using the system:

"You may have a case that seems unsolvable due to the massive amount of material. By uploading it to such a system, you can get an assessment. I think this could be very beneficial."

Despite the optimism regarding the implementation of AI tools, experts stress the need for accuracy verification. AI in law enforcement is prone to errors and can result in false outcomes. For example, one model that predicted the likelihood of reoffending turned out to be inaccurate and biased against Black individuals.

Furthermore, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has recently criticized the use of AI in policing due to the risks of errors and biases.
