Baldur's Gate 3 is not only the triumphant winner of the BAFTA Games Awards 2024 (five awards including the main GOTY), but also the first game in history to win all the main "Game of the Year" awards in the industry, as noted by GamesRadar.
The RPG from the Belgian studio Larian by Sven Vinke and one of the most award-winning games of 2023 received the main GOTY / "Game of the Year" awards (or equivalent) at all five major ceremonies: Golden Joysticks, BAFTA, GDC Awards, DICE Awards, and The Game Awards. In this way, it surpassed heavyweights like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War, and Elden Ring (all of whom lacked one award), becoming the first since the founding of the TGA awards 10 years ago.
Interestingly, the most diverse years in terms of distributing the main GOTY awards were 2014 (Dragon Age: Inquisition, Destiny, Dark Souls 2, Shadow of Mordor), 2019 (Untitled Goose Game, Sekiro, Outer Wilds, Resident Evil 2 Remake), and 2021 (It Takes Two, Returnal, Inscryption, Resident Evil 8). Considering the bleak trends in game development with massive layoffs and studio/project closures, perhaps we should not expect such a variety of winners in the coming years.
It is worth noting that the organizers of the aforementioned ceremonies define the winners differently, involving professional juries or specialized media. Therefore, Baldur's Gate 3 was able to conquer a wide range of experts. Actually, since its release in the summer of 2023, practically no one has criticized it. However, the Larian studio has no plans to capitalize on its success - there are no plans for additions to Baldur's Gate 3 or Baldur's Gate 4. Instead, Larian will focus on a new IP, rather than D&D games. Earlier, Larian's CEO mentioned that the studio is currently planning the development of two games and announced a return to the Divinity series, but without specifics for now.
