Physical education teacher and former athletic director of a middle school in Pikesville, Maryland, USA, was arrested and charged with using artificial intelligence to clone voices to frame the school principal.

Baltimore County police believe that a recording circulating on social media in January, in which Pikesville Middle School principal Eric Eiswert makes racist and anti-Semitic comments, is a fake. Experts told The Baltimore Banner and police that the recording, which led to Eiswert's temporary suspension, has a "smooth tone, extremely clean background noises, and absence of consistent breathing sounds or pauses."

Baltimore County police traced the recording back to Dazhon Darien, a former school athletic director whose name was also mentioned in the audio. From school computers, he allegedly "gained access to OpenAI tools and Microsoft Bing Chat services." He was also linked to the published audio through an email address and corresponding phone number for recovery. It is not reported which exact AI voice platform Darien supposedly used.

Police arrested Darien at the airport and issued a statement: "It is believed that Mr. Darien, who was the athletic director of Pikesville Middle School, made the recording to retaliate against Mr. Eiswert, who was at the time conducting an investigation into potential misappropriation of school funds."

The suspect was released after posting bail. He was charged with theft, disrupting school operations, witness retaliation, and harassment.

In light of such situations, it is understandable why OpenAI made the decision not to provide its AI voice-to-text Voice Engine platform for public use. The service, which only requires a 15-minute audio recording to clone someone's voice, is available only to a limited number of researchers due to the potential risks.
