Mechanical keyboards Retro by 8BitDo have different appearances, each paying homage to classic technologies. The design hints are subtle enough to avoid copyright issues. Similar to the keyboards in the style of NES and Commodore 64, the 8BitDo M Edition inherits the color scheme and button shape of the classic IBM Model M keyboard from 1985. Enthusiasts appreciate the springy buttons of IBM keyboards, the button design, and their role in the emergence of modern mechanical keyboards.

Original IBM Model M

The M Edition keyboard connects to devices with minimal Windows 10 or Android 9.0 with a USB-A cable, a 2.4 GHz USB-A wireless adapter, or via Bluetooth 5.0. 8BitDo claims up to 200 hours of battery life. The M Edition also comes with removable "super buttons" A and B, which connect to the keyboard via a 3.5mm jack and are programmable.

The IBM keyboards of the 80s did not use modern mechanical switches. They had elastic springs on a membrane sheet, making it harder to press keys than the keys on the previous F model keyboard. Unlike the original membrane switches, the M Edition features Kailh Box White V2 mechanical switches that are easy to press with clear clicks and noticeable, but not delayed, feedback. 8BitDo switches can be quickly replaced.

The M Edition doesn't have a numeric keypad - 8BitDo offers a separate numeric panel in the same style, which can be connected via Bluetooth, a "dongle," or a cable. The keyboard itself costs $100, the additional panel - another $45. The 8BitDo M Edition may appeal to those who feel nostalgic for IBM but don't want their workspace to feel stuck in the past.
