The government has approved amendments to the decree on the use of radio frequencies, enabling the rollout of 5G in Ukraine. This was reported by ITC.UA, citing Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.
A pilot 5G project will be launched in three cities across Ukraine, where the compatibility of the new generation network with military equipment will be tested. This pilot will occur in two phases and last for two years. During the trials, the National Commission for the State Regulation of Communications and Informatization (NKEK) and the Ukrainian State Center for Radio Frequencies will assess whether 5G equipment impacts military networks.
The launch of the pilot project is a significant step towards a full 5G rollout by 2030, Fedorov emphasizes. The 5G standard allows data transmission to be ten times faster than 4G. This creates new opportunities for transferring large volumes of information at ultra-high speeds. Additionally, the new technology will provide greater flexibility for operators, allowing them to use 2100 MHz frequencies for 2G, 3G, and 4G, while freeing up the 694-862 MHz spectrum for mobile communications.
“The decree will also provide greater flexibility for operators — the 2100 MHz frequencies can now be used not only for 3G but also for 2G or 4G technologies. Moreover, ceasing the use of the 694-862 MHz frequencies for analog and digital television will free them up for mobile communication,” writes Mykhailo Fedorov.
