The previous Dragon Age games featured significant expansions that played a crucial role in their narratives. However, The Veilguard will not receive any, as all of BioWare's resources are devoted to Mass Effect 5.
BioWare's creative director John Epler mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone that there are currently no plans for downloadable expansions for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the studio is fully focused on the next Mass Effect.
Interestingly, BioWare's last RPG, Mass Effect: Andromeda, also did not receive any DLC. The reason for this was certainly different. It is unofficially known that there were plans for an expansion that would narrate the story of a missing quarian ark; however, due to the game's poor reception, the DLC was canceled. Conversely, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was envisioned from the start as a complete experience that does not require additional context provided by expansions.
John Epler stated that the design of The Veilguard was definitely influenced by the mixed reception of BioWare's two previous titles, Anthem and Andromeda:
“I really believe that Andromeda was a better game than it was perceived to be. But on the other hand, I don’t think the perception was unfair. At launch, there were technical issues and things that didn’t work.”
In contrast to the open spaces of Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Veilguard places greater emphasis on storytelling. This is likely due to the negative reception of the exploration of open spaces in Andromeda:
“We developed earlier versions of Dragon Age 4, and we had a much more open game. But again, we faced the same issue: how to make it compelling or interesting in terms of narrative,” Epler stated.
Nonetheless, the DLC for the Dragon Age games were quite good. The Awakening expansion for Dragon Age: Origins introduced Anders, who returned in Dragon Age 2. In turn, the latter received the DLC Dragon Age 2: Legacy, which featured the Return of Corypheus as the main antagonist in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The expansion from the third game, Trespasser, laid the groundwork for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
